Swimming and Burgers

I”ve had a funky schedule lately, (my husband and I are jugging childcare while my in-laws are in Hawaii) so I’ve been off during the week a few days. It’s been too cold to stay outside for long so I’ve been taking my little girl swimming. It’s been awesome, but we’re starving by the time the pool hours are over. Which leads us to epic burgers at Wee B’s on O”Malley Rd. We scarfed down a double, bacon cheese burger and fries. I don’t think I’ve ever been so full. It was epic. What’s your favorite burger place?

Olive Garden Sneak Peek

I took the tour of Olive Garden today. It was interesting to watch a new restaurant getting ready for an opening. The staff, 165 people, were still training. The bartenders were learning about the wines, (I’m told 80% come from Italy) and the wait staff was getting lessons on the computer system. The managers were even inspecting uniforms to make sure everyone’s sleeves had the proper creases.
The restaurant, in the Tikahtnu Commons, opens Monday at 4 p.m. The GM, Dawn Bellerose, has her name craved into stone outside of Alaska’s first Olive Garden.
“We are just so excited at this point to be here to be part of the Anchorage community to be reaching out.” Bellerose said. “It’s a great feeling, and its an honor, its an honor to be the first one here.”
Olive Garden seats 262 people and has 75 servers and four managers.
A second location will open at the Dimond Center in the fall.
So are you going and do you think there will be a long wait?
Check out some of the photos I took on our tour this morning.

It’s time we talked about it. What are your thoughts on Olive Garden? There is now an opening date for the Anchorage restaurant: Monday, Jan. 23rd. I drove by Tuesday and it looks like they’re down to putting the finishing touches on the building. So will it affect Anchorage’s eating scene, is there enough love of food to go around, do you like Olive Garden? I’m posting the press release from the company below, but let’s discuss will you be going?

Press Release
ORLANDO, Fla. – Olive Garden Italian Restaurant, the leading restaurant in the Italian dining segment with more than 750 restaurants, will open its first location in Alaska on Monday, Jan. 23, creating 165 jobs. The restaurant is a division of Darden Restaurants, Inc. (NYSE:DRI), the world’s largest full-service restaurant operating company.

“We are excited to open the first Olive Garden in Alaska and are honored to join the Anchorage community,” said Dan Kiernan, executive vice president of operations for Olive Garden. “Our team here in Anchorage is looking forward to delivering a great dining experience for all of our guests.”

The Olive Garden menu features Italian specialties including signature items such as

homemade soups, garden fresh salad and warm, garlic breadsticks, as well as limited-time offerings. Unlimited soup or salad and breadsticks come with all entrees or are served as a meal. Guests at Olive Garden will find great value and choice for lunch and dinner.

Olive Garden also offers Garden Fare options which allow guests to personalize their Italian meal to help meet their dining needs. Substitutions are offered for any side dishes to accommodate a guest’s meal, including lower in fat and carbohydrate options, as well as gluten-free versions of some favorite Olive Garden recipes.

The new 7,441 square-foot restaurant hosts up to 246 guests and features a design that is inspired by traditional farmhouses found in Tuscany, Italy. Olive Garden design teams traveled to Italy to work with Italian architects Fabio and Lucia Zingarelli and the result is a restaurant design that recreates the warmth and simple beauty of a Tuscan farmhouse.

The Anchorage Olive Garden has a rustic stone exterior, typical of the buildings in the Italian countryside, and an interior accented by Italian imports designed to make the dining experience here a tribute to the restaurant’s Italian inspiration. Ceilings supported by exposed wood beams, stone and wood accents throughout, and terra cotta tile highlight the interior.

In addition, the bar top is crafted from lava stone and hand-painted by artisans in Italy with a design created exclusively for Olive Garden. Vibrant imported fabrics decorate windows and dining seats, while hand-painted plates, designed by Lucia herself, adorn rustic stone and stucco walls. The interior also features lighting fixtures that are all distinctly Italian.

The restaurant also will feature a number of sustainable design elements, including recycled building materials, enlarged windows to increase natural light, low-water landscaping and energy-efficient equipment. These enhancements are part of the Sustainable Restaurant Design initiative launched by Darden Restaurants.

Dawn Bellerose has been named general manager and will be responsible for leading a team that maintains the highest quality of food, wine and service — aiming to consistently exceed guests’ expectations. Bellerose brings extensive restaurant industry experience to her new position. She has been with Olive Garden for five years, most recently as general manager of the Olive Garden in Worcester, Mass.

To recognize Bellerose’s role as head of the Olive Garden family in Anchorage and to emphasize the importance the company places on its general managers, Olive Garden honored Bellerose by setting her name in stone. Travertine marble imported from Tuscany was chiseled with Bellerose’s name and placed prominently by the restaurant’s front door.

Olive Garden is now accepting applications for employment. To be considered for an interview, please apply online at www.OliveGarden.com/Careers.

A second Olive Garden location will open in Alaska later this year in South Anchorage. To receive the latest information on Olive Garden, guests can visit www.Facebook.com/OliveGarden or sign up for the “Our Family Table” newsletter at www.OliveGarden.com.

Olive Garden is the leading restaurant in the Italian dining segment with more than 750 restaurants, more than 88,000 employees and more than $3 billion in annual sales. Olive Garden is a division of Darden Restaurants, Inc. (NYSE:DRI), the world’s largest full-service restaurant operating company. In 2011, Darden became the first full-service restaurant company ever to be named to the FORTUNE “100 Best Companies to Work For” list. Olive Garden is committed to making a difference in the lives of others in the local community. As part of this commitment, the Anchorage Olive Garden will participate in the Darden Harvest program, which has donated more than 50 million pounds of food to local community food banks across the country. I’ve realized today that recently I’ve been eating a ton of red meat. Like, enough that I should probably start slowing down a bit. Explore different proteins. But first, I had to make this beef stew. It’s that time of year when you cringe just by walking out your front door and any food that can help warm you up, I’m a fan of. So sit by the fire with your favorite puppy and enjoy.

Growing Local, in Spenard

Who caught the story by Annie Feidt over at APRN about a company, located in Spenard, that is growing vegetables, sprouts, basil and making tofu? It’s called Alaska Sprouts. They’re growing everything indoors, even in the winter. You’ve probably seen their whole, basil plants in New Sagaya.  Apparently they are only selling in limited markets now, but the goal is to expand. I can’t get the link up, probably operator error, so if you’ll have to cut and paste this link: http://www.alaskapublic.org/2012/01/06/ak-sprouts/

Celebrating in Style, with Chicken, Burgers and Hugs

Who went to Harold Geroge Brown’s 90th birthday party this past Saturday? He’s the owner of the Lucky Wishbone, which is one of Anchorage’s oldest family run businesses. Brown and his wife Peggy opened the restaurant 56 years ago. Talk about a cool, and well liked, guy. His goal was to get 90 hugs on Saturday–something he quickly surpassed. The restaurant was covered in balloons and packed with customers who came out to help celebrate the day. The waitresses dressed-up like flappers, a nice added touch. When my family got there the place was packed, but luckily we got seats pretty quickly. Alice is addicted to their french fries, and I’m in love with their cheeseburgers and fried chicken. The place screams “old Anchorage,” and that’s a great thing.

My Little Meatball

I kind of hate January. I know you shouldn’t say that, (and my birthday is this month so I should love it!) but really any month that comes after Christmas can’t win. It’s dark, cold and nothing exciting happens in January. Now that I”ve dumped on you, let’s talk about something nice so I can get out of this funk. Meatballs. They really are one of those perfect meals. I found two recipes, one from the New York Times and one from Smitten Kitchen, and merged them. I used one pound of ground sausage and one pound of ground beef plus a bunch of basil and parsley. The two recipes are similar after that. It takes awhile to make if you have a small cast iron pot, but it’s worth it. If this can’t cure the blues, nothing can.
