This past weekend I took the girls apple picking at a friends home. We have a huge haul, and I can’t wait to put something together. But, to be honest, I don’t have an incredibly exciting recipe. What are your suggestions? I’d like to feature some readers/viewers in an upcoming Alaska Bites story. Anyone out there willing to share some family recipes, apple butter, apple pie, apple turnovers?

I just picked 7 gallons of crabapples.
Can you help me with different ideas.
Love turnovers! Was going to make jelly,
    but don’t want that much.
    Thank you Jane:)

This is great! I’ve been in ANC for 12 years, but was raised in the upper Midwest, where the best apple harvest was after the first hard frost brought out the sweetness, with windfall fabulous for apple cider and butter and sauce.

I wish ANC-area (Valley, etc) commercial orchards stayed open into October; a look-around a couple years back told me they all close for the season by 15 September, normally before a hard frost. Let me know if you’re aware of any orchards staying open longer, please!

    Thanks!
